During Julius Caesar, in one of the most well-known scenes William shakespeare wrote, Antony influences the group, soon turning the grieving crowd right into a rioting mob. Antony persuades the Romans in his talk through Diathesis, Logos, & Pathos. Antony’s speech undermines the conspirators even while it seems deferential to them. Antony uses Diathesis to catch the audience’s attention. He states “For Brutus can be an reputable man; so might be they all, all honorable men” (Act a few, 81-82). Antony never straight calls the conspirators, including Brutus, traitors; he is generally calling them “honorable” in a sarcastic manner that the group is able to appreciate.
This can be a irony about what he is declaring. Later in the scene he goes back to into a sarcastic tone and states “O masters, easily were got rid of to blend your hearts and minds to mutiny and craze, I should carry out Brutus incorrect, and Cassius wrong— who also, you are very mindful, are honorable men. Let me not do them incorrect.
We rather want to wrong the dead, to wrong me personally and you, than I will incorrect such reputable men”(Act a few, 120-126). Antony is making fun of righting the “honorable males. ” Antony reassures the crowd he’s “not to disprove what Brutus spoke” but to explain what this individual does know. He is applying logos, reasoning.
Antony got “thrice presented [Caesar] a kingly crown” & this individual refused it each time. That’s exactly what asks “Was this ambition? “(Act three or more, 95-96). He makes the crowds think if Brutus’ motives where authentic or just away of envy. “You all loved him once, but not without cause. Then what reason holds you again from grieving him today? “(Act three or more, 101-102). From this line he could be asking the audience why should that they applaud Brutus for eradicating Caesar. That were there loved and admired Caesar at some point so why should they certainly not mourn him now. For the end of Antony’s speech he starts using solennit causing the crowd to feel sympathy for Caesars and his wrongful death.
He mentions that for the audience to bear with him. His “heart is in the coffin generally there with Caesar” (Act several, 104-106) that’s exactly what takes a minute to recollect himself. The audience begins to -realize just how “Caesar has received great wrong” (Act a few, 109) By simply how Antony weeps for Caesar makes the Romans realize what every one of the conspirators performed was very wrong, since Antony, although he is a celebration animal he could be still a noble person. In the end Antony had the better advantage when it came to employing Ethos, Logos, and Pathos. Antony, showing himself a noble gentleman, got the Romans to see the wrong action and induced them to look for revenge.
