Recently I’ve read two very good short stories: Usually a Purpose (by Lalu Ross) and Gentlemen, The Verdict (by Michael Bruce). Always a Motive is about a young guy, named Paul Manetti, who will be accused of kidnapping. Men, Your Verdict is about five men who are asked about the murder of sixteen crewmembers. While both equally Always a Motive and Gentlemen, The Verdict will be written in third person and take at the viewers emotions, Always a Reasons theme is definitely how persons tend to see things from one perspective and items can change instantly while Gentlemen, Your Entendement theme focuses on the justification of homicide in certain circumstances.
Gentlemen, The Verdict can be described as story that teaches us that sometimes in life we need to kill, or perhaps let somebody die to ensure the survival more.
In this tale Lieutenant-Commander Oram (who’s in charge of the submarine) is forced to play god when his boat goes down. There may be only enough air for 2 days and rescue will not come till five days after their air supply will run out.
Lieutenant-Commander Oram would rather permit some of his crew survive than make them all die. But he has a hard choice for making: who will always be the ones to survive, which I consider is also an element of the motif. He constitutes a solemn choice to kill sixteen guys, including him self, to save the lives in the five married men on-board; because there is a wife and possibly even children that would live sorrowfully if their father was gone. This statement can be turned around in Always a Motive, in which a father manages to lose his kid and wife and is required to live an unhappy life only. Joe Manetti was a father to a son and a happy husband, nevertheless tragedy struck when his son was ran over and killed by a truck.
After that Joe’s your life fell apart; his wife kept him, this individual doesn’t work any longer, he barely eats, and he works away from his problems simply by driving, generating for on the other hand long right up until he seems okay. Some day during one of his driving ‘spells’ he comes back via getting household goods and finds a baby on his backseat. Equally Always a Motive and Gentlemen, Your Verdict get their moments where, as a audience, you feel for the characters.
