Sula, The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas

Contemporary America appears like the imaginary city of Omelas from Ursula LeGuin’s Those Walk Away From Omelas because there are numerous luxuries that Americans will not give up in spite of a “suffering child” or maybe a dying globe. This makes America similar to Omelas because the people of Omelas were not willing to give up the happiness with their city to assist a struggling and perishing child. Metaphorically, poorly paid employees that make our clothes and gadgets are one of the many suffering children that Americans know about, nevertheless completely disregard.

In foreign countries and even here in America, there are people, which includes small children, which can be working in sweatshops for less than minimal wage to supply us with clothes electronics and more. This kind of fact is not just a secret and most Americans know very well what goes on in sweatshops in order to have the items they want. What stops all of them from performing anything to help these personnel by aiming to give them bigger wages and better operating conditions is that they know that they will not be able to get those things they want for the price they may be getting them. People in america are not willing to quit the things that they need to provide for the abused staff because it is really easy for people to push aside items that may affect their lives in a huge way. The people of Omelas knew regarding the suffering child but they ignored this because these were able to force it to the back of their mind so that the kid did not provide an affect on the happiness. There exists almost no big difference between People in america and the persons of Omelas.

Those walked far from Omelas were the ones who didn’t want to go on realizing that their pleasure was based on the struggling of an innocent child. While there aren’t a large number of, there are some Americans who “walk away” via electronics and clothing manufactured in foreign countries. These people don’t pretend like there are no suffering staff in sweatshops making the things that Americans need. The people who also walk away do many things just like petition and strike to end the sale of things manufactured by sweatshop employees and for excessive wages for the workers. These folks are not content with happiness supported by suffering and decide to leave, just like the kinds who walked away from Omelas.

In summary, Americans will not give up all their materialistic delight for suffering people which usually resembles the folks of Omelas not being ready to give up their happiness for a suffering person. There are a few individuals who fight for the abused personnel and only buy items where they will know employees are treated fairly. These types of Americans appear like the ones who went away from Omelas because they can not let a child to suffer to allow them to always be cheerful.
