A poem which in turn deals with the topic of love through strong human emotion can be Valentine written by Carol-Ann Duffy. The poets attitude to love is usually unusual because she supplies a different perspective on how we could look at it by describing the unconventional and pessimstic aspect of life. The advanced metaphorical tactics. use of imagery, structure, term choice and how Duffy goodies love.
Immediately the reader think the poem is all about conventional and original like by the heading Valentine since it has associations of bouquets, choclates and love. It refers to the traditional notions of love and traditionnal love. However the poem begins with a negative, direct assertion which immediately sets the tone and reveals the very fact that this is not a stereotypical valentine poem, Not only a red flower or silk heart. The poet can be adamant in telling the reader what the composition is not about, and this leaves someone curious about the actual poet feels love is as Duffy evidently doesnt think that conventional products, such as tulips or minds, signify appreciate between a couple in any significant way. And also to further her point of stong emotion, Duffy provides this word a stanza of its own to extensively emphasise her point.
In contrast, Duffy starts another stanze educating the reader with the actual surprise an onion -. I actually give you a great onion, this metaphor reveals their romance and explanation of love. It also suggests that you peel apart an onion getting further into it just as you do in a romance, peeling apart the tiers, getting further into your spouse. Duffy then simply goes onto how the onion is a symbol of like, she says, It is a moon twisted in brownish paper this kind of use of symbolism is effective as it can be used in different contexts. The lady could be implying that the onion indicates take pleasure in in the way that tge exterior is irrelevent, it is only the interior that counts and provides any well worth, and the thought of the onion being twisted could imply protection and security, or possibly there is something concealed inside like a gift. Likewise the reader providing the present might believe it will not need sophisticated packaging, the gift of affection is enough and highlights the theme, fact and trustworthiness.
In the earlier stanza, the attitude was informative and light. But in tghe beginning of the subsequent stanza, Duffy becomes more direct and gradually even more forceful as she provides the gift and says Below. This gives the impression that her feelings are becoming volatile in the way that she employed an imperative, when providing a gift could be a graceful procedure. I do not really find this process very effective though. The gift should not be forced upon her fan, but it reveals how keen she is regarding the gift idea. It could also suggest a reluctance by her enthusiast to take the onion, when he is driving him for taking it. Duffy then procedes talk about how the onion willl affect her lover It is going to blind you with holes, like a mate, the red onion is like an admirer because it makes one cry. The verb blind might also suggest the regular idea of enjoys (or Cupids) being blind. She in that case says, It can make your reflection a wobbling photo of grief. The onion shows a distorted image of anyone who discusses it, like this reflection were a wobbling photo an image which will wont maintain still, because the onion takes time to be in on a surface area.
In the last stanza the poet begins it off by explaining the quality parts of the red onion, she says, Fatal, this has connotations of poison, pain and suffering which suggests how love is usually, tainted and dangerous. It could also signify the love will last till your death since it clings for you. It scemy marks the lover this kind of shows that the onion is usually possesive and wont keep.
To conclude, i believe Duffy has successfully used the onion as an appropriate materialistic sybol of love in the uses of metaphor to hyperlink them with each other. The immediate elimination of cliched gifts demonstrates her displeasure towards them as presents of love
