Poem comparison dissertation

All four poems that we read are related in their purposes and goals; however , they are also very different. “Lucinda Matlock” by Edward Lee Professionals, “Chicago” by Carl Sandburg, “Richard Cory” by Edwin Arlington Robinson, and “We Wear the Mask” by simply Paul Laurence Dunbar are typical about the joys and heartaches of existence. How we look at life makes life advantages or disadvantages.

“Lucinda Matlock” is a story of a girl, who, by some criteria, would have a life that people consider a average.

However , the narrator with the poem says that it was a fantastic life and that life can easily be genuinely appreciated when it is taken from you.

“Chicago” by Carl Sandburg is the most closely related poems to “Lucinda Matlock”. Inside the poem, the folks of this city are grubby, “evil”, and happy. Those are not saying to themselves, “Well, my life can be horrible as this is where i came from and this is my underpaying job”.

They are laughing and memorable because they have life. “Chicago” is contrary to “Lucinda Matlock” because Carl Sandburg’s depiction of lifestyle in Chi town is so considerably more cynical than that of Master’s more upbeat characterization and depiction of life on the globe.

“Richard Cory” is a composition about an aristocratic person that under- appreciates existence, and, therefore commits suicide. The narrator talks about how envious he is of Rich Cory. Just in the very end carry out they refer to the fact that he is basically a very unfortunate man. This poem can be described as representation from the front that some people organized to hide all their inner selves due to embarrassment or many other feeling of give up hope.

Finally, we read “We Wear the Mask” simply by Paul Laurence Dunbar. This is very similar to “Richard Cory” in the message. The message is usually again there are some whom sometimes cloister their interior selves behind a barrier of a false personality. In the poem, Dunbar writes:

“Nay, let them simply see us while/ We wear the mask/ We all smile, nevertheless oh great Christ, our cries/ To The from tormented souls happen. “

The other part of the estimate says that they have tortured spirits. They smile to hide their very own pain and in addition they cry to Christ to get help.

All the poems reveal the common motif that “life is what you make it” which people often hide their true id behind a false one (As shown in “Richard Cory”, “We Use the Mask”, and “Chicago”). Though the final two poetry mentioned have more in common together than they are doing with the 1st couple poetry that were mentioned in class, each of the poems are very similar in their greatest subject matter.
