Nigerian Breweries (NB) Plc appears to dominate the brewery industry as it accounts for 60 % of the brewery market share in Nigeria. Managing Director/CEO, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Mr. Michiel Herkemij disclosed this to Vanguard right after the pre 63rd Gross annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Lagos the other day.
He mentioned that NB is trying to build long term capacity for its people in order to preserve its marketplace leadership in the country. According to him, ” The contribution of Nigerian Breweries Plc (NB Plc) to the total result of Heineken should be about less than 10 % (10%).
I believe it is fair to say that any company around the world that is leading to the results of Heineken is adding less than 10% of the total result.
He said ” We certainly have come in which to stay Nigeria. We could not investment here in vein as we always upgrade the breweries. In the area of Corporate Sociable Responsibility (CSR) Nigerian Breweries is not lacking. The projects carried out in season 2008 were all massive, the amount of money involved is very huge; yet , we may certainly not disclose the exact percentage of turnover used on CSR; yet relative to others in this country, we are a task model inside our CSR activities and might continue to be and so in years ahead.
In the CSR we emphasis not only within the boreholes that you see, although we also focus on education. There is a college degree Trust Fund (ETF) that individuals operate; in which on a every year basis exclusively there is N100 million in fact thrown returning to the culture.
When commenting around the impact with the global financial crisis on the company, Herkemij said ” Nobody can refuse that there is a meltdown and a global downturn actually occurring, even which includes us in Nigerian Breweries. We would not deny that. You can also see there is a direct impact of this in Nigeria. The country’s olive oil revenue from your Federal Government (FG) continue to drop. At local and point out level, you see projects struggling. he Naira also has depreciated and these have affected on a large amount of companies; in particular those ones which might be fully influenced by imported elements for creation, they are struggling big time. You see interest rates increasing in the country astronomically about 22% to 23% which is stressing.
For this extent, the NB supervisor noted that there is a recession going on and Nigeria like any other nation is feeling the impact now. “One point that we believe, which we now have seen through the years within The african continent is that The african continent is more strong, better and equipped in working with crisis;
from this country there are not so various people that are actually living above their requirements; because it is a desperate contemporary society, when you go to The european countries, or to America everybody has enormous loans chance and you may well borrow 3 x more than the salary. ow imagine when ever this drops you are in big trouble. But also in this country, there may be nothing like that; people are accustomed to spend only what they have got, This individual added.
Sufficient reason for this scenario you can view that we aren’t totally affected because people demand what they can pay for. he added. Nigerian Breweries Plc, the pioneer and largest making company in Nigeria was incorporated in 1946 and recorded a landmark if the first jar of Star Lager Beer rolled off of the bottling lines in Lagos Brewery in June 1946.
