Personal Responsibility, Grief Counselling, Adoption, Self improvement

Excerpt coming from Essay:

Because rewarding as that experience was, not all of my work at the re-homing agency was as fulfilling. Most people understand that any re-homing process – especially when it occurs internationally – can be described as long and complicated procedure that must deal with significant layers of paperwork. Success can be, unfortunately, certainly not guaranteed. But when adopting family members are only a few weeks away from receiving their fresh children, we all begin to assume that adoptions will go through and we’ll have helped create brand new families. Therefore, it was specifically devastating for everyone at the firm, not to mention the families engaged, when two weeks before a fresh batch of Chinese kids was intended to arrive, the Chinese govt decided against letting the children leave the region. In hindsight, the reasons will be unimportant; no rational reason could have assuaged the tremendous grief of the households who had expectantly and adoringly prepared their very own homes to get the arrival of their kids. The consequences with this bureaucratic decision stymied the creation of new and content families and destroyed weeks of work that I had took part in to properly match possible families with Chinese kids who would have to be adopted.

While technically my work was done with the adoption method when the Chinese government refused the little one’s release, My spouse and i felt required and accountable to comfort and ease the sadness of the people who merely found out all their new child was not gonna arrive. But also for as much capacity as I had to facilitate the adoption process and help mate children with new people – such as the thankful function I did with said ten-year-old Chinese girl – I came across I was woefully unprepared to provide comfort intended for the debilitating grief these families sensed. As rewarding as it had been to aid communication plus the development of familial bonds among adopting parents who effectively received children, I found it equally center wrenching to want to be able to support these busted parents in order to find myself struggling to do so.

My decision to pursue graduate student education in mental health/counseling has been powered by my personal inability to provide substantive succor for the actual families destroyed by the apparently arbitrary decision of the China government that day. Got I recently been better conditioned to help solve grief in traumatic scenarios, I might have been completely able to slightly improve upon the private disasters that occurred that day. It can be my sincerest hope that furthering my personal education in mental health/counseling will provide me with the useful tools and techniques to increase lives and be sure that more re-homing situations develop as beneficially as they performed with one particular ten-year-old Oriental girl.
