Mathematics
ASTI provides three math courses: Geometry, Algebra II, and Pre-Calculus. If students wish to take higher math courses, they must register for classes at the College of Alameda. However, students must pass the college math placement test before enrolling into the classes, if they have not done so. Freshmen are required to take either Geometry or Algebra II (if students have already completed geometry). Sophomores are required to take Algebra II or Pre-Calculus (if students have already completed Algebra II).
Geometry
Geometry is designed to prepare students for Advance Algebra and Mathematical Analysis (Trigonometry). This course satisfies one of the three years of the mathematics required (four years recommended) for UC/CSU admission. Some topics include: triangles and their properties, quadrilaterals and their properties, proofs, constructions, circles, similarity, and planar.
Algebra II
Advanced Algebra is part of the foundational sequence of courses necessary to prepare students for the study of the Calculus and other college-level work. After mastering this material, students advance to Mathematical Analysis/Trigonometry (Pre-Calculus). This course satisfies one of the three years of Mathematics required (four years recommended) for UC/CSU admission.
Pre-Calculus
Pre-Calculus includes the study of concepts in Trigonometry as well as Mathematical Analysis. In addition, we will complete a significant review of the techniques students have learned in algebra and geometry. The trigonometric functions studied are defined geometrically rather than in terms of algebraic equations. Facility with these functions as well as the ability to prove basic identities regarding them is especially important for students intending to study more advanced mathematics, physics, and other sciences. Mathematical Analysis takes a functional point of view toward mathematical reasoning in solving problems, combining many of the trigonometric, geometric, and algebraic techniques needed to prepare students for the study of calculus. After mastering this material, students may advance to Calculus 1. This course satisfies one year of mathematics (three years of mathematics are required, four years recommended) for UC/CSU admission. The course will include a review of topics covered in Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2.
